My name is Ashvini Fernando and I have been at Mitchelton
State School wearing various ‘hats’ for over eight years! I have a passion for
working with children and have had the privilege of supporting students from
Defence Force families the past two years as the Defence School Mentor.
Until our move to Brisbane, my family and I moved towns,
states, and countries on a very regular basis and these experiences have
enabled me to relate to Defence students and families. My family and I have
experienced the challenges of constantly moving and still work hard to maintain
and strengthen these connections with friends and family who live both near and
far.
My hope in supporting your children are that they make
strong connections with their ‘tribe’ at Mitchelton and that they continue these
connections with other families from previous postings.
Mitchelton State School has a long and proud history of
serving the Defence Force community and has a well-established Defence School
Mentor program. The program contributes to the welcoming atmosphere of the
school so that Defence Force students have the best possible start. The program
also runs several lunchtime clubs and activities (some open to all and some exclusively
for Defence students) where students can make friendships within the community
in a safe and moderated environment. The program provides targeted support to
students experiencing parental absence or challenges arising from the Defence
lifestyle.
Inevitably, when the time comes for us to say goodbye, part
of my role is to prepare and support your children as you embark on the next
adventure.
I am at the school Monday and Friday 8.30am to 1.30pm and
on Thursdays from 10.00am to 3.00pm. You can get in touch with me via the
school office.
