My name is Ashvini Fernando and I have been at Mitchelton
State School wearing various ‘hats’ for over eight years! I have a passion for
working with children and have had the privilege of supporting students from
Defence Force families as the Defence School Mentor.
Our School Defence Mentor Program runs:
- The dropzone during 1st breaks
- Boardgames under B Block 1 day a week
- Defence Club/Mindful Moments for Defence family students (+1 welcome)
- Special activities for Mothers day, Fathers day and special events
Our school DSM position is funded by Defence Member and Family Support, a branch of the Commonwealth Department of Defence.
Our Defence School Mentor is a school employee dedicated to supporting Defence students who can:
- Provide families with information about the school environment and the support available to assist with their child’s schooling needs.
- Support students to access school based social and emotional support.
- Offer opportunities for students to build relationships and connections through events and other initiatives.
- Raise awareness in the school community about the impacts of the Defence lifestyle on students and families.
Our DSM can help your family with welcoming your child into the new school and preparing to change schools.
Teachers can collaborate with the DSM to enhance understanding and support for Defence students in the classroom.
